The Animal Spirit began in 1999 as a privately-funded humane education organization and has served as a popular, award-winning online home base for animal advocates. In 2007, The Animal Spirit merged with a NJ-based 501c3 nonprofit animal rescue and assistance organization called Homeless Animal Lifeline (HAL) and now serves as HAL's Public Outreach Program.
The Animal Spirit is a free resource for education and data used to teach children and adults value, respect, and care for the animals and environment around them. It includes reference material regarding a variety of animal issues including abuse prevention, companion animals, cruelty-free living, Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), and protecting wildlife.
Through the dissemination of ideas and the development of educational materials, The Animal Spirit has helped animal advocates, including educators, students, community members, grassroots organizations, shelters, rescues, and others, incorporate humane education and outreach into thousands of communities and schools.
We are all interconnected, not just with our human world, but with all sentient beings. Please join us in increasing empathy for animals by extending your circle of compassion. We hope that these pages will be an informative tool.

"Responsible Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is the most effective way to care for feral cats while at the same time ensuring that the size of the colony decreases to zero. The Animal Spirit is the national leader in educating the public about TNR as part of an overall abolitionist approach to animal rights. I support The Animal Spirit. It does great work." ~ Gary L. Francione, Professor, Rutgers University School of Law |
